The Secret Life of Pets 2 is a roller coaster adventure in the life of the domestic animals we were first introduced to in the first instalment.

The film breaks off into 3 parts, each featuring Max (Patton Oswalt), Snowball (Kevin Hart) and Gidget (Jenny Slate).

Max’s story continues with his owner Katie (Ellie Kempler) getting married and having a kid named, Liam. This major change causes Max to become overprotective of Liam. Enter Rooster, a wise and gruff farm dog aptly voiced by Harrison Ford, who Max meets during a family trip to the countryside. Rooster teaches Max to deal with his fears, a lesson which comes in handy by the film’s third act.

Before Max went on the trip, he left his favourite toy in Gidget’s care. This of course does not end well as Gidget soon loses the toy that so happened bounced its way into the open window of the Crazy Cat Lady’s home.

Snowball on the other hand has an owner who plays make-believe with him and dresses him up in superhero garbs, making him believe himself to be a real superhero. His talents are put to the test when a Shih Tzu named Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) seeks his help to rescue a white tiger trapped in a circus.

Directed by the same man responsible for the Despicable Me franchise (Chris Renaud), The Secret Life of Pets 2 has its fair share of adorable characters and moments that are bound to make you go “aww”.

While its a lot of fun, the lack of direction during the first half of the film causes it come off more like 3 short films rather than one full feature. The stories do tie up in the end but the lack of synchrony in the first two acts makes the third act feel rather rushed. Still an enjoyable ride for kids though.
