Chat with Eva Tang, director of Xinyao Documentary ‘The Songs We Sang’!

The Songs We Sang, a Xinyao documentary directed by first-time feature film director Eva Tang, will be released exclusively at 5 Golden Village cinemas from 24th March! 

The film premiered at last year’s 26th Singapore International Film Festival to sold-out screenings and drew rave reviews from audiences. 

In conjunction with the theatrical release, a special dialogue session where director Eva, talented local music composer-singer Jim Lim and well-known rapper Shigga Shay will share and discuss more about what is xinyao, and how xinyao is becoming so influential to the current local music industry.

The session will be held right after the screening of the documentary.



The Songs We Sang 《我们唱着的歌》races the germination and flowering of a unique homegrown movement. The documentary is a nostalgic journey through an important chapter of Singapore’s cultural history, as told by the composers and performers who became the voices of their generation. These include key xinyao  figures like Liang Wern Fook梁文福, Eric Moo巫启贤, Billy Koh许环良and many more. The film also features Singaporean pop stars like JJ Lin 林俊杰 and Stefanie Sun 孙燕姿 sharing their views on how xinyao paved the way for their emergence.
