[Movie Synopsis] A young 20-year-old-woman named Wing (Janice Vidal) visits her grandfather's laboratory in Hong Kong. By accident, Wing opens a chamber and resurrects a woman about her age. Wing then discovers the woman awaken is her mother Gigi (Janice Man), who was cryogenically frozen shortly after becoming involved in a fatal car accident some 20 years ago. Gigi, on the other hand, must also come to grips with her daughter being the same age as her and also her favorite actor Leslie Cheung having long passed away.
The newly acquainted mother and daughter duo then set out to find Gigi's boyfriend Kit (Aarif Lee) who is also Wing's biological father. When they find Kit, they learn that he's not the same man as he was twenty years ago and, in fact, a middle-aged homeless man who lives under a bridge.
Q: Is this your first film as the leading heroine?
Janice Man: My past films have mostly been centered around the theme of love. This film is also of no exception. I am happy that I am given more opportunity to have more screen time to play the role of Gigi.
Q: Have you done any research on that particular period of time?
Janice: I need to study what it is like to be in the 80s. I discussed with the director about how people in the 80s dress, their tones, their choice of words and so on. The director pointed out that we were only aiming at dressing like the 80s, but I don’t need to care too much about the way I talk or what I talk about, as long as I can be myself and make people feel that I’m young.
Q: Any chemistry working with Aarif Lee? Were you charmed by him?
Janice: We’ve worked together before. After this project, I feel that we’re more in tune with each other in terms of acting and such. I am very happy about it. Actors tend to immerse themselves into the story when filming. But I can separate my acting jobs and my real life clearly. Besides, our parents’ friendships go way back and they have known each other for a long time.
Q: How would you grade your own performance in this film?
Janice: I fell in love with films since my first one. I think it’s very challenging. I will watch my own performance. I know the audience is really careful so acting puts more pressure on you than modeling.
In this film, I played a role from her early time as a student, then being in love, becoming
pregnant, then a mother. A lot of the time I need to act purely with my imagination. Sometimes I will watch other films for reference. For example I watched Juno to help myself understand the role better, and then perform in my own way to portray a lively and cheerful yet obstinate character. I am satisfied with my own performance. I think I passed this one. I hope I will get better the next time.

Q: Wei Lan is older than you in real life. Is that weird to play her mom?
Janice: No, not really. Films are anything but ordinary. As an actress, you need to try everything. This happens to be a great opportunity.
Q: Anything memorable during filming?
Janice: The production crew found a huge hiding machine to hide me. It was quite a scene. In the film the father of my role hid me for over 10 years. So the crew has to apply special makeup on me, such as attaching ice particles all over my body. It was a lot of work. I need to stay really still during the makeup process; otherwise the ice particles will come off.
Q: How would you choose between acting and modeling?
Janice: I wouldn’t just drop my modeling career just because I start to take acting roles. I still want to further my modeling career. I’m also happy that more people are approaching me for films. Films are a big part of my life now. I love watching films so much. I will consider my acting career as a lifelong one, but I wouldn’t give up modeling either.
Q: Did you face a lot of challenges for the new film “Punished /报应”?
Janice: This film was nothing like the ones in the past, be it in the story or the characters. It talks about human nature. It’s more intense. My role is quite a rebel. She has a horrible relationship with her family. It’s also the first time I’m hit for real. I mean not even my parents have slapped me before so this time I gave my first slapping experience to Huang Qiusheng. I was hit eight times, and I was also kidnapped. I truly felt that you have to do anything to be a real actress.
[Additional Note]
Janice Man also stars in the movie 'Punished' which has only just been screened in theatres on 16 June 2011. Click HERE for more details.
Q: Does it give you a lot of pressure to work with Li Ming?
Janice: It was a lot of pressure during the first couple of shots. Although we met a lot in real life, the thought of working with my boss still makes me nervous. Li Ming is a very professional actor. As for my performance, he knows that I am doing my best. So generally it’s been good and he gave me a lot of support.
Q: Is there anyone whom you want to work with in the future?
Janice: I like Zhou Xun a lot. She’s quite adapting. She’s very good at playing different types of roles. And they’re very believable and the audience can soon be absorbed into the characters and plots.
Q: What kind of roles do you want to play?
Janice: I’d like to try roles that suffer schizophrenia, the ones that are emotional and radical because I think those roles would be more difficult to interpret.
Q: Have you ever consulted your mom’s opinion when filming this film?
Janice: My mom provides me with the best reference. When she showed me her photo album, I can see that she was putting a lot of thoughts in the way she dressed, which gave me a lot of inspiration. I also asked her about what it’s like to be pregnant, so I will know how it feels to be a pregnant woman.
