5 Movies to Check Out in May!

InCinemas picks 5 films coming out next month that is going to make some fans (and video game fans) pretty excited! Two local films of contrasting genres are also releasing in May!

Local filmmaker Kelvin Tong is back after a 5-year hiatus with the first-ever Singapore-Hollywood horror production, The Faith of Anna Waters! This marks Tong’s 9th feature as a director after his successful hits including ‘It’s A Great Great World’ ‘The Maid’ and ‘Rule #1’. Starring Elizabeth Rice, Matthew Settle, Adrian Pang, Jaymee Ong and Pamelyn Chee, the film will be releasing in the US, Taiwan and Hong Kong subsequently! 
 
[Synopsis]
Tenacious journalist Jamie Waters travels from Seattle to Singapore to investigate the mysterious suicide of her older sister Anna. Inexplicable events at Anna’s new house and the odd behavior of her daughter Katie lead Jamie to a string of bizarre suicides involving strange allusions to the Tower of Babel. The supernatural forces arrayed against Jamie intensify when she receives emails from the dead Anna. With the help of her sister’s former husband Sam, Jamie races to solve the mystery of Anna’s death as demonic forces attack Katie and evidence mounts of the Tower of Babel rising once again – in the form of the Internet.

Money Monster

The stakes are high in dramatic-thriller Money Monster, starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Television host Lee Gates (Clooney) is being held hostage during a live TV show where he talks about all things Wall Street. While cameras are rolling and the world watch in anticipation, it is up to producer Patty Fenn (Roberts) to negotiate with the gunman, while talking to the police who are surrounding the TV station. 


[Synopsis]
In the real-time, high stakes thriller Money Monster, George Clooney and Julia Roberts star as financial TV host Lee Gates and his producer Patty, who are put in an explosive situation when an irate investor who has lost everything (Jack O’Connell) forcefully takes over their studio. During a tense standoff broadcast to millions on live TV, Lee and Patty must work furiously against the clock to unravel the mystery behind a conspiracy at the heart of today's fast-paced, high-tech global markets.

X-Men: Apocalypse


The mutants are back in X-Men: Apocalypse, and are fighting their biggest villain of their time - Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) and his four horsemen. Bryan Singer's fifth X-Men film showcases a much larger scale than its predecessors, and based on its latest trailer, seems like the beloved Wolverine is joining the gang after all! 


[Synopsis]
Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

The Angry Birds Movie

 

Based on the popular phone app game Angry Birds, the 3D computer-animated action-adventure comedy film, The Angry Birds Movie, explores the question we’ve always been dying to know: ‘Why are these birds so angry’? From the writer of ‘The Simpsons’ the adventure comedy is directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, and voiced by Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage.

[Synopsis]
 In the animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, we'll finally find out why the birds are so angry. The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We're the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

Young and Fabulous

Produced at a budget of S$1.5 million, Young and Fabulous is Singapore’s first cosplay film, inspired by the stories of actual cosplayers, students, teachers and parents in Singapore. Apart from showcasing this favourite hobby of Singaporeans, this coming-of-age story hopes to inspire youths to pursue their dreams. Young and Fabulous is directed by Michael Woo, and stars Aloysius Pang, Joshua Tan, Gurmit Singh and Joyce Chu. 


[Synopsis]
Young & Fabulous is a coming-of-age story of a group of teenage friends—Royston, Violet, and Hao Ren—who overcome all challenges and obstacles to fulfil their dreams. On their journey of self-discovery, they also learn the meaning of friendship, the different perspectives in parent-child and teacher-student relationships, and ultimately the need to have the courage to stand up for what they believe in.

In this competitive era with an education system that focuses on academic excellence, how will the younger generation find courage and confidence and hold on to their dreams and hopes in a society that values practicality over creativity?
