Screening of 'Setan Jawa' With Live Gamelan Orchestra Haunts Esplanade In July

The black-and-white silent film directed by celebrated Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho, ‘Setan Jawa’ will screen accompanied with a live orchestra in Esplanade on 21 July. The screening is part of Esplanade’s ‘Pesta Raya - Malay Festival of Arts’. The film premiered in Melbourne, Australia to 2,500 audience members in February.
The soundtrack is written by Australian composer Iain Grandage and Indonesian composer Rahayu Supanggah. It will be played by Garasi Seni Benawa from Indonesia and Metropolitan Festival Orchestra from Singapore.

Synopsis:
What would you sacrifice to save your lover? A young man is kept distant from his lover by a strict and unforgiving society. He'd go through hell to be with her, but when a deal with the devil goes sour, hell comes to him instead.
The 70-minute feature is inspired by the classic films ‘Nosferatu’ and ‘Metropolis’ and Javanese mythology. Nugroho also draws from his childhood experience in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
