Noma Dumezweni is joining the cast of Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid!
Dumezweni was last seen as the scene-stealing lawyer Haley Fitzgerald in HBO’s hit series The Undoing opposite Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Her name might sound unfamiliar to you but Dumezweni is no stranger to Disney as she had also appeared in 2018's Mary Poppins Returns! The actress has also won an Olivier Award for her performance in A Raisin in the Sun and portrayed Hermione Granger in both the West End and Broadway production of the award winning play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Dumezweni's role in the upcoming live-action is unknown but it will reportedly be a brand new role that wasn’t in the animated movie.
The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee. It will incorporate original songs from the 1989 animated classic, as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken with lyrics by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Halle Bailey will portray Ariel, the mermaid princess who dreams of being a human, while Melissa McCarthy plays the sea witch Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton with Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina lending their voices as Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle respectively.
The Little Mermaid has yet to set a release date.
