Drifting is an unfiltered portrayal of the difficulties faced by Hong Kong’s homeless population. The film was inspired by actual events when the Hong Kong government officials cleared away the belongings of the homeless people living under a flyover in Sham Shui Po. The homeless people later filed charges against the government demanding compensation and a public apology.
Drifting was released in Hong Kong on 3 June 2021, and collected over HK$6.4 million at the Hong Kong box office. The film has been invited to several prestigious film festivals internationally including the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, British Chinese Visual Festival and Italy Udine Far East Film Festival; and in August 2021, the film won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 15th FIRST International Film Festival (第15届FIRST青年电影展) held in Xining, Qinghai Province, China.
