Cate Blanchett talks retiring from acting

Cate Blanchett has voiced plans to step away from her craft one day.

During an interview with the U.K.’s Radio Times magazine to promote her forthcoming audioplay, BBC Radio 4’s The Fever, she hesitated to announce her title as actress. When co-director John Tiffany pointed it out, she simply replied, “I did, didn’t I? It’s because I’m giving up.”

“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. There are a lot of things I want to do with my life," the Black Bag star clarified.

The actress also remarked that she doesn’t love the interview process: “No one is more boring to me than myself and I find other people much more interesting. I find myself profoundly dull... When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud. I’m not that person.”

With decades-worth of films that span genres, Blanchett has contributed a wide variety of memorable performances that earned her multiple accolades – winning Oscars for her work in The Aviator (2005) and Blue Jasmine (2014), as well as BAFTAs for Elizabeth (1998) and Tár (2023). You may also know her from starring in blockbuster franchises such as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings films and Hela in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

You can see Blanchett on the big screen now in her latest film Black Bag, directed by Steven Soderbergh and also starring Michael Fassbender.
