Singapore Film Festival is launching a cinema hall dedicated to screening independent and local films!

By InCinemas  /  01 Dec 2025 (Monday)

From 1 January 2026 onwards, a 66-seater hall in Golden Village (GV) Cineleisure will be utilised as a dedicated screening hall for independent and Singapore films!

Dubbed the SFS Somerset, the space will be run by the Singapore Film Society (SFS), taking over from The Projector since its closure in August 2025.
.
Eight films will be screened weekly and will be focused on works that have limited or no screenings in Singapore. Films will play at a regular 7:30pm slot from Wednesdays to Sundays, as well as 1:30 and 4:00pm for Saturdays and 4:00pm on Sundays. Tickets are priced at $15 for non-members and $9 for members.

Kenneth Tan, chairman of SFS, also promised to screen every local film which passes the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s muster that comes his way. The line-up, which will be released weekly from late December, will be flexible to allow audience demand and feedback.

On his decision to launch SFS Somerset, Mr Tan said:

The closure of The Projector had a chain effect – a lot of independent films were looking for a home and some festivals were looking for alternative venues.

In the domain in which we work, the opposite is happening. Post-pandemic, people are yearning for communal experiences, provided they are special and different. I think it also explains, in large measure, why there was such an outcry when the news of The Projector was announced.

The initial arrangement with GV is for SFS to occupy this space for the whole of 2026, although Mr Tan fully intends for this to be a long-term space. On his hopes, he said:

I hope that SFS Somerset will become the go-to home base for independent films – really, all films that want that home base.
