The stirring Latin and Ballroom dance spectacular, Burn The Floor, will be showing in Singapore this October! And just when we thought the dance cells in our body can finally "step down" for quite a bit (after the Step Up Revolution movie in late August), we realized we were mistaken! Not in the presence of Burn The Floor!

Thanks to Base Entertainment Asia, InCinemas was treated to a sizzling dance preview of Burn The Floor on Wednesday, 26 September, when six of the Burn The Floor dancers came to Singapore to share their fiery passion for dance! This time, it's going to be a whole new level because it'll be a live showcase at Marina Bay Sands theatre only from 9 - 14 October!

Not to miss the opportunity to get to know them, InCinemas sat down with one of the beautiful dancers, Kallyanne Brown, and we're glad to say that the bubbly Australian dancer was pretty eager to answer the burning questions (pun intended) we had for her, even after their seemingly-explosive dance preview earlier.

The cheerful lad joined the Burn The Floor company in 2009 and during her teenage years, Kallyanne won the right to represent Australia at her first world 10 dance championship in Spain! She discussed with us about the show and the hard work behind each successful performance and wait a second... We almost might not even get to interview her at all! Read on and find out what happened!

InCinemas: Hello Kallyanne, we saw you ladies dancing in those high heels just now. Isn’t it painful to twirl and stomp with shoes that high?

Kallyanne: It isn’t painful as these shoes are specially made for this dance. it’s actually comfy, but we are still dancing in high heels so we do get sore feet, but it’s okay.

InCinemas: When is your first time you realise your talent in dancing?

Kallyanne: For me, I think I realised my passion and love for dancing even before I realised I have the talent because when I was younger, it didn’t matter if I won or lost, the fact that I was really doing what I love was great. When you love something so much, and willing to work hard for it, you can do anything.

InCinemas: Was ballroom dancing your first genre of dance that you discovered?

Kallyanne: It was! Ballroom dancing was the first dance style I ever tried. My cousin is a ballroom dancer as well and when I went to watch my cousin’s performance, I fell in love with the style.

InCinemas: What can we expect from the show, Burn The Floor?

Kallyanne: Our company is very special. We have a very special bond that gives the excitement and energy among us. There are only six of us here today but when we're all together, we have so much energy that you can feel it right away. The audience can expect a really fun time and see our passion of what we do. A very sexy show… *breaks into laughter*

InCinemas: Are there any memorable or funny experiences during your rehearsals or performances you will like to share?

Kallyanne: There are Lots! *chuckles* Everyday, something funny happens. I have stories to tell, but it’ll take me days. There are 23 of us and we travel around together all the time, you can imagine the things that happen. There is always someone forgetting something, or fall over on stage, which I find it quite funny! And yesterday, I almost missed my flight!

InCinemas: You almost missed your flight to Singapore? What happened?

Kallyanne: I was on a separate booking from the rest of the company, which I don’t really know why. They were on Cathay Pacific while I was on Singapore Airlines. I didn’t check my flight details before that and just went with everyone else. When we were checking in, the airport staffs were like “No… you’re not flying with this airline”. So I had to run all the way to Singapore Airlines and I just made my flight. Wasn’t very fun. *Laughs*

InCinemas: As dancers, you guys got to always be in good form and maintain your shape. What’s your diet like? Is it tough maintaining it?

Kallyanne: Yup! When we are doing the shows, we are very cautious of our bodies. Also because we are doing a two-hour show of just dancing, we have to make sure we can sustain our energy throughout.

Most of us always ensure that we have enough carbohydrates as it’s the best source of energy but also for us women, we also watch what we eat because we wear little, little dresses and no one wants to see… …. *chuckles*

InCinemas: So what’s your meal like? Perhaps what will you have for lunch if it’s a performance day?

Kallyanne: When we have a show coming on, for breakfast, I will always have eggs, high protein food, usually poached eggs and toast. For lunch, depending on what time the show is, I will probably have a plate of pasta or something like that. If it’s close to show time, I would take a protein shake and another time after the show.

InCinemas: Is this a torture? Don’t you guys feel hungry?

Kallyanne: Never… I never really feel hungry? (pauses) We can eat whenever we want to, when we’re hungry, we eat. We dance so much so we don’t, don’t eat because we are constantly exercising. For me, I tend to lose a lot of weight so I’m trying to sustain it.

InCinemas: Many parents in Singapore will not allow their kids to take dance as a profession. Do you have any advice to aspiring dancers out there who wants to take the same career route as you?

Kallyanne: The most important thing for anybody who wants to achieve something is you have to commit to it. Even if my parents were not going to support me, I will always be a dancer because that’s what I want to do, dance is in my heart. So if you are willing to commit yourself to a 100% to what you want to do, then you can do it. If that’s what you want to do? Go for it!

InCinemas: How different is it to perform for Burn The Floor and to dance for competitions?

Kallyanne: It’s completely different! The first thing is because in a competition, you are fighting against everyone else, you’re trying to win the title. Whereas in the show, we are a family! We are all working together, so there isn’t any fighting or competing.

The best thing in our show is because there are no restrictions. In competitions, we are not supposed to perform any lifts, we have to do certain steps, so there is none of that in our show, we are free to express ourselves.

InCinemas: Do you have a say in the choreography?

Kallyanne: Er… sometimes actually. We have our main choreographer and he sets out the choreography but there are times in the show where he gives us two bars of eights to develop something of our own. There are spaces where we can give our inputs, but he does the main parts.

InCinemas: Do you get to choose your dance partners?

Kallyanne: We don’t get to choose our partners, I only started dancing with my partner in January when he joined the company.

InCinemas: Wow! That’s like only nine months! How did you build the chemistry with each other?

Kallyanne: Building chemistry with someone is difficult because I met him in January and straight away you are dancing very intimately and closely. I wouldn’t have know him before he entered the company, but I guess the lucky thing for us is because we do everything together. We live together, eat together and travel together so we get to know one another very quickly. Then again, it really does take time to build a very strong bond with each other.

InCinemas: How is it like with the other members?

Kallyanne: We are really like a big family. Sometimes when I get angry, I will tell them ‘I’m mad, I don’t want to talk to you’, but the next day, we are hugging and laughing with one another. So it’s just like having 22 other brothers and sisters.

InCinemas: Awww, that’s nice! Anything you would like to experience or taste in Singapore?

Kallyanne: Yes! The first thing I need is to go shopping in Singapore! I love shopping and that’s bad. *chuckles* For me when I travel, I will really like to try the authentic cuisine. So definitely looking forward to have a nice dinner here.

InCinemas: Chilli Crab?

Kallyanne: That’s good? YEAH! Great, now that’s where I need to go!

InCinemas: Last question, can you tell us more about your rehearsal schedules?

Kallyanne: Rehearsals are always changing. Sometimes, it could be seven hours, eight hours and even ten hours, it really depends, so usually full length days.

During show days, we are called in two to three hours before the show, so that’s about five hours of dancing. Then again, it really depends what we need to do. If a new couple comes in, we have to rehearse longer hours together with music, lights, costumes and so on.

For my partner and I, we usually go in an hour or two hours before anyone else so we get the time to practice. Practice makes perfect!
