We’re glad Denis Villeneuve epic sci-fi Dune is finally seeing the light of day on the big screens, where it truly belongs.
Aside from directing duties, Villeneuve also receives writing and producing credit for the film, starring an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Chang Chen, Javier Bardem and Charlotte Rampling.
The first of two planned films based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, the film follows the story of young Paul (Chalamet) - son on Duke Leto Atreidis (Isaac) and Lady Jessica (Ferguson). He is the heir to House Atreidis and yields the powers of the Bene Gesserit, thanks to his mother.
House Atreidis is bestowed the stewardship of the planet Arrakis, home of the source of the most precious resource in existence - an opportunity which the Duke Leto does not turn down despite knowing it is an elaborate trap.
A betrayal forces Paul to put his skills to use - both the powers of the Bene Gesserit as well as sword fighting from training with House Atreidis’ best, Brolin’s stoic Gurney and Momoa’s cool as a cucumber Duncan Idaho - and travel the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his people.
Dune might be Villeneuve’s most ambitious work yet and a masterpiece of this magnitude does not happen without a mighty support system behind it. The committed performances from the film’s ensemble played a solid part in driving Villeneuve’s vision to fruition, with the outstanding member being of course Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet.
On the more technical side of things, Greg Fraiser’s work behind the camera and Hans Zimmer’s score bring the whole film to life.
This is one film you do not want to miss.
