The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues its streak of churning out films to fuel Phase Four and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is its most compelling one yet.
Helmed by Sam Raimi (best known for the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy), the film sees Benedict Cumberbatch return as the titular superhero alongside Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda/Scarlet Witch. Also returning are Benedict Wong’s Wong and Rachel McAdam’s Christine Palmer; and introducing Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.
Wasting no time at all, Multiverse of Madness delves right in and delivers the MCU’s most fast-paced story to date. It demands viewers’ attention for all 126 minutes of its screen time, especially with Raimi’s personal style and expertise.
Cumberbatch – who’s perfected the role of the mystical superhero – carries the film well despite its larger-than-life storyline that the MCU normally preserves for more than one Avenger. His performance is matched by none other than Emmy-nominated Olsen who continues her reign of excellence as Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch. Most surprising, however, is Gomez’s ability to easily fit right into the narrative of the already robust MCU roster. Her potential and likability will have you wanting for more America Chavez in future MCU films and hopefully, we do soon.
Accompanying Raimi’s mind-bending visuals is a magnetic aural composition from the master composer himself, Danny Elfman. His score reaches its peak with an electrifying number during an intense battle scene that’s nothing like you’ve ever seen in an MCU film before.
Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a complex film that delivers the on hype. Superhero fatigue is a thing of the past. We’re happy.
