Seven years after his critically-acclaimed hit Mad Max: Fury Road, writer-director George Miller reemerges with Three Thousand Years of Longing, an adaptation of the 1994 short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" by A. S. Byatt, which follows the story of a djinn who recounts his life after he is freed by a professor. The film stars Tilda Swinton as the lonely professor opposite Idris Elba as the djinn.
The film is probably one of the more subdued fantasy films you would have the pleasure of viewing but don’t let that deter you for it also has elements of romance that is unlike many of its kind. The set and costume designs for the accompanying flashback sequences are impeccable and a real visual treat when cut to from the more bland setting of a hotel room where the djinn begins his story.
Much of the success of the film is credited to its captivating leads’ magnetic performance and chemistry. The very story-driven plot relies heavily on Elba and Swinton’s delivery of Miller and co-writer Augusta Gore’s engaging screenplay.
Three Thousand Years of Longing is a story on storytelling and would be best enjoyed with an open mind and no urgency for everything to make perfect sense. It also begs the question: what would your wishes be if granted the opportunity?
