An endearing, action-packed, funny, and stirring sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is one of the few superhero films that surpasses its predecessor on all fronts.

The film sees the return of Zachary Levi as the titular superhero, with supporting cast Asher Angel (Billy Batson), Grace Fulton (Mary Bromfield), Jack Dylan Grazer (Freddy Freeman), Adam Brody (Freddy’s superhero form), Ian Chen (Eugene Choi), Ross Butler (Eugene’s superhero form), Faithe Herman (Darla Dudley) Meagan Good (Darla’s superhero form), Jovan Armand (Pedro Pena), DJ Cotrona (Pedro’s superhero form), Rachel Zegler (Anthea), Lucy Liu (Kalypso), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam/The Wizard) and Helen Mirren (Hespera). David F. Sandberg also returns to direct.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods follows the Daughters of Atlas (Hespera and Kalypso) as they steal the wizard’s magical staff to restore their powers and exact revenge for the death of Atlas.

Kalypso plants a golden apple that grows the Tree of Life, unleashing creatures who attack the city. In the midst of it all, she steals Freddy, Pedro, Darla, Eugene, and Mary’s powers; leaving only Billy/Shazam with powers. Together, Shazam and his family must fight to save their city and the world.

Following the themes explored in Shazam! (2019), this sequel stays true to its core on the power of friendship and family. It’s the heart and principle driving force of the Shazam films that sets it apart from most superhero films we’ve seen come out of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). It's also arguably lighter with natural comedy that invokes genuine laughter.

Levi as Shazam is the body and soul embodiment of the superhero manchild, proving he’s the best man for the job. His charm and charisma is matched by his equally charming and lovable fellow castmates, making for a film most endearing and fitting for its solid familial storyline.

There’s room in this sequel for every character to shine, both regular and their superhero counterparts. But the scene-stealers are the Daughters of Atlas – a magical Mirren and the ferocious Liu riding a dragon, with West Side Story breakout star Zegler being the ultimate star of them all. The young actress lights up every room she’s in with a magnetic energy that’s undeniable. Her immediate chemistry with Grazer is just one example.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is chockful of comedy, thrilling action, and heartwarming scenes that makes it the perfect all-rounded blockbuster fit for the big screens. It even ends with a very fitting cameo teased throughout the film that's a great callback to the first film!

It would be a damn shame if James Gunn’s future plans for the DC Universe does not include this version of Shazam and his family so if this is really the last we’ll see of them, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is one hell of a film to bow out on.
