Synopsis
In 19th-century Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Okiku supports her penniless father by teaching children to read and write at a temple school. She forms a connection with Chuji, one of the men who collect waste from their tenement. When days of heavy rain make the outhouse overflow, causing problems and making tensions rise, Okiku's father is taken away. Okiku’s efforts to save her father leave her mute, and she is sent into self-isolation. Themes of love and wisdom emerge as the story unfolds.
