The token faces of the MonsterVerse franchise return to share the big screen in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Following the events of Godzilla vs Kong (2021), Kong, who now presides over Hollow Earth, encounters more of his species living on unchartered land. The hostile primates forces him to unite with Godzilla–who is otherwise occupied with defeating other kaijus around the world and curling up in the Colosseum for a nap–to stop their tyrannical leader, Skar King, and his powerful, climate-changing Titan from destroying the surface.

Adam Wingard is at the helm again with returning stars Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle and Brian Tyree Henry. Joining them are Dan Stevens, Rachel House, Alex Ferns and Fala Chen.

The New Empire is first and foremost a monster-centric film though the human characters do get a bit more focus this time around, especially the further exploration of Hall and Hottle’s Dr. Andrews and Jia as adoptive mother and child. Stevens’ zany Ace Ventura rip-off is a welcomed addition with Henry’s natural comedic chops adding to the film’s humour.

Now back to the main event... Kong never did get his own solo sequel but much of this film delightfully acts as one. He’s finally given more screentime to shine, a Mini Kong to interact with, and he’s even enhanced with a weapon!

It does take awhile for the film to build up to the epic fight scenes (which are undoubtedly the main draw of these films) but the payoff is well worth the wait. The thrilling action demands the biggest screen you can access and nothing less.

Godzilla vs Kong has shown us that the two Titans are more than capable of a team up so where the true excitement lies is in the reveal of Skar King’s secret weapon, the ancient Titan, Shimo, whose name translates to "frost", "white", or “cold”, alluding to its ice breath powers. The character designs on both Godzilla and Kong are impressive enough as they are but Shimo takes the cake with her irridescent scutes and vibrant purple blue spikes. Absolutely mesmerizing to look at if she weren’t so occupied with destroying the Titans.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire promises a team up of epic proportions and it does not disappoint. It’s a raging fun time of big monsters throwing big punches, if you ignore the countless buildings destroyed and lives loss along the way.
