Zheng Yi Sao, originally surnamed Shi, was born into a family with pirate lineage. Due to a twist of fate, she was forced into prostitution on pirate ships. Later captured by the pirate Zheng Yi, she struck a deal with him—to become his wife and share equally in their maritime plunders. Known for her decisiveness, ruthlessness, boldness, meticulousness, and fair judgment, she quickly earned respect among the pirates and became Zheng Yi's most trusted ally, revered by all factions as the "Dragon Lady."

In 1807, Zheng Yi tragically perished in a powerful typhoon at the age of 42. At just 32 years old, Zheng Yi Sao overcame internal opposition and succeeded him as leader of the Red Banner Fleet. Facing dissent within and threats from without, she consolidated her authority through strict discipline and adopted advanced Western naval technology, significantly strengthening the fleet's power.

During a time when Western colonial powers ravaged the Qing Dynasty, leaving its rulers helpless, Zheng Yi Sao—a pirate—stood up in defiance. She led her fleet in fierce resistance against foreign invaders, becoming a legendary heroine in the defense of her homeland.
