If you were sat for Ready or Not and came out reeling over its mind-blowing vehemence (pun intended), you best strap in for an equally explosive sequel.
From returning writers (Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy) and directors (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett), comes Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, a direct sequel to their successful 2019 film. Samara Weaving reprises her role as Grace MacCaullay, alongside a new cast comprising of Kathryn Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, David Cronenberg, and Elijah Wood.
Following the immediate events of Ready of Not, this sequel sees Grace thrust into yet another deadly game of hide-and-seek, but this time it's with the Council, an international group of elite families with a bloodlust for ultimate power. She’s joined by her estranged sister, Faith (Newton) for a day of bigger thrills and higher stakes. Can they make it until dawn?
It’s hard to imagine seven years has passed since the release of the first film, but the film’s approach at picking up right where they left off barely lets that come into play. Grace is now hardened from experience with a deeper disdain for the devil-worshipping elite. Amongst them: twins Ursula (Gellar) and Titus Danforth (Hatosy),Chen Xing (Olivia Cheng) an opportunistic typical Asian mom playing matchmaker, unserious millennial bros Madhu (Varun Saranga) and Viraj (Nadeem Umar-Khitab), and a terrible shot Ignacio (Néstor Carbonell) representing the El Caido family alongside his daughter Francesca (Maia Jae) who has a personal vendetta against Grace for stealing Alex Le Domas from her. A standout scene features Francesca going head to head with Grace on a ballroom dancefloor, both decked out in bridal gowns, soundtracked to Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." It's a wild scene deserved to be seen that gives Bride Wars a run for its money.
The kills are no less brutal this time around as is the constant bickering between the MacCaullay sisters. Newton makes an impactful addition alongside Weaving, sharing great chemistry and playing an equally hard-headed and strong-willed female protagonist. But it’s Weaving’s time to shine again as the returning final girl, donning her iconic blood-soaked wedding dress from the previous film like it’s a ceremonial uniform to play hide & seek.
If you’re looking for a gruesome, gory fun time at the cinemas, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is just for you.
