Nirvanna the Band is a fictionalised band created by two best friends Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol for a mockumentary web series (2007–2009) with a sole premise of them landing a gig at the Rivoli (a bar that was once one of Canada's hippest music clubs), despite them not having songs to play. The web series was eventually adapted into a television series, Nirvanna the Band the Show (2017–2018), with the same dream and logline.

Now, 18 years later since its “inception”, Nirvanna the Band returns with an even bigger adaptation – Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, with the same hopes of playing a show at the Rivoli.

It’s a years-long gag that never let’s up and only gets bigger and better with every iteration. Fans of the web series and show will appreciate this expansion while those unaware of the comedic duo and their faux band will be new converts.

The film retains the original concept of improvised plot and dialogue as Matt and Jay scheme their way to their dreams. Matt proposes a crazy publicity stunt to get noticed: skydive off the CN Tower into the SkyDome during a baseball game. The attempt fails when the SkyDome roof closes during their dive, which adds to Jay's frustration over Matt's plans.

Matt’s next crazy idea is to pretend to be time travellers, equipped with a time travelling vehicle à la Back to the Future. By a twist of fate, Matt’s fake modification works and their RV transports them back to 2008. What follows is a wild hidden camera journey of self-reinvention and a beautiful lesson in friendship.

The whole concept that revolves around Nirvanna the Band is very absurd but the executions are real. While the film goes all out with its nonsensical storyline, you’ll catch yourself in bewilderment thinking “there’s no way they pulled that off” or wondering how they got away with it. But as disbelieved as you are, you’re also rooting for them through the manic chaos because it's a film that let’s you in. It's so out of this world and yet, so grounded.

Matt and Jay’s dedication to the bit is highly commendable. Their persistence and relentless energy admirable, but its their unapologetic brand of humour and wit that’s the greatest thing about Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. This may be one of the best cinematic experiences of your life, so don’t miss it.
