Six films in, Insidious returns with a new family, new demons and another terrifying reason to stay far away from The Further.
Insidious: Out of the Further follows Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the very house she grew up in. When she discovers that she has the ability to enter The Further — the purgatorial realm of lost souls that has haunted the franchise since its beginning — she soon learns that her connection to it works both ways. Gemma doesn't just have the ability to enter The Further; she can bring whatever is lurking there back with her.
Written and directed by Jacob Chase, the sixth instalment stars Amelia Eve alongside Brandon Perea, with Lin Shaye making her return as everyone's favourite paranormal investigator, Elise Rainier.
While Out of the Further may not have you hiding behind your hands for its entire runtime, it knows exactly when to catch you off guard. The film finds fresh ways to explore The Further and deliver its scares, with moments of silence and slow-building suspense leading up to well-timed jump scares. There's also an unexpected amount of humour sprinkled throughout, giving audiences some much-needed breathing room.
Beyond the scares, the film also has a surprisingly emotional side, touching on a mother's unconditional love and the sacrifices she makes for her child, often without them ever realising it.
Insidious: Out of the Further proves the beloved horror franchise still has a few tricks up its sleeve. It may not be its scariest outing, but with well-earned jump scares, suspense and an unexpected amount of heart, this trip back into The Further is well worth taking.
