Synopsis
Based on the novel by Ge Shuiping, the story begins with the sudden death of a husband, whose family is new to the remote mountainous village. In the aftermath of that tragic event, the villagers come to understand the plight of the widow, a mysterious mute, and forces the man deemed responsible for the accident to look after her. Visually reminiscent of the early dramas of Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou, with fewer political undercurrents, Mountain Cry is an assured and tasteful romantic drama that touches on small town groupthink and humanity’s penchant for self-preservation at another’s expense.
