After 14 years, Pixar’s The Incredibles is finally back with its sequel. Incredibles 2 picks up where The Incredibles ended, with the Parr family fighting the Underminer. After they fail to capture the Underminer, they are forced to keep their superhero identities secret because they seem to be creating more problems for society. However, this changes when a millionaire, Winston Deaver (Bob Odenkirk) and his sister (Catherine Keener) who propose a plan to make the people recognise how important superheroes are in keeping the city safe.

Much of the sequel focuses on Elastigirl as the face of the superhero revival. Elastigirl is thrust into the limelight as she saves a train from crashing, proving that superheroes are indeed useful to society. Meanwhile, the rest of the Parrs try to live normal lives as Mr. Incredible takes over the role of a house husband, subverting gender stereotypes. Mr. Incredible has a lot on his plate with his children: Violet’s boy problems, Dash’s “new math” and Jack-Jack’s newfound superpowers. While the plot is predictable and somewhat lacklustre, the humour and action keep the audience entertained. There are numerous comedic instances and Jack-Jack steals the show with how adorable and unpredictable he is. Edna Mode (voiced by director Brad Bird) makes a comeback as Jack-Jack’s temporary babysitter.

There is a lot happening in the movie, but the lack of a central focus makes it seem like nothing is happening at all. The film appears to be making a statement on the presence of a strong superwoman as Mr. Incredible takes the back seat in this sequel, yet in recent years, this idea has been over-emphasized in Hollywood films. The saving grace of the film is in the quirky characters of Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack (occasionally Edna) which fans of the first movie will definitely be able to better appreciate. The movie is definitely entertaining and suitable for audiences of all ages. It might have been a revolutionary film had it come out earlier, but the sequel took too long, resulting in it being underwhelming and less stellar as compared to its predecessor.
