Rarely are there films dedicated to both Valentines Day and Chinese New Year, considering how close both events falls so close to one another every year. With western ideas permeating Chinese culture as well, we wonder how there aren’t more similar films. A Beautiful Moment is a love comedy build around both festivals. Simon Yam plays Simon, our super-rich protagonist and successful property tycoon, who makes his fortunes using immoral means.

The story starts on the eve of Valentine's day when Simon choose not to forgive an ex-staff and save him from his financial troubles. While expecting his business rival to make a move on him, Simon gets surrounded by thugs where he gets saved by Michelle (Michelle Wai). This quickly moves into a love story - pretty convent huh.

A Beautiful Moment plays on the Chinese family hierarchy for a hilarious comedic effect. While Michelle is the present love interest of Simon, her mother, Bo (Carina Lau), a famous psychiatrist with unconventional therapy methods, Simon’s ex-girlfriend. The love plot spiraled comedy when Valentines turn to meet the mom at Chinese New Year. This scene is a well crafted full of witty jabs between Simon and Bo as they fought to make the other yield and acknowledge who is the “parent” in this odd love triangle.

While we would love the A Beautiful Moment to focus on the love triangle, the plot, however, has managed to introduce a number of distractions including a from a horror comedy skit, gang-fights, and a parody of Hong Kong’s famed gambling movies over the top deck shuffling. I wonder if I am watching two different movie blend into one. It is a miracle that both plots managed to support one another by the end of the film with Simon rekindling his love for Bo one Chinese New Year later without calling her “mother”.
