Synopsis
In a superhero origin tale unlike any other, the film is the incredible true story of what inspired Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston to create the iconic Wonder Woman character in the 1940's. While Marston's feminist superhero was criticized by censors for her 'sexual perversity', he was keeping a secret that could have destroyed him. Marston’s muses for the Wonder Woman character were his wife Elizabeth Marston and their lover Olive Byrne, two empowered women who defied convention: working with Marston on human behavior research -- while building a hidden life with him that rivaled the greatest of superhero disguises.

Professor Marston And The Wonder Women
is an interesting biographical film that steers away from the norm, just like the characters in the movie. Whether or not you are a fan of Wonder Woman, this film will open your eyes to something out of the ordinary.

Professor Marston And The Wonder Women
depicts the story of how the famed DC Comics female superhero Wonder Woman came about, focusing on the lives of psychologist Professor Marston, his legal wife Elizabeth and the Marstons’ live-in mistress Olive. Their controversial way of living had caused them trouble but it is also a major contributing factor to the creation of Wonder Woman.
The Good
Despite it being a biographical film, the plot is far from boring and contrasts their unusual lives against public views well. Professor Marston developed a DISC theory, which stands for Domination, Inducement, Submission and Compliance. Apart from it being reflected in the Wonder Woman comic, Professor Marston, Elizabeth and Olive also seemed to be living the theory.
During Professor Marston’s psychology lecture, he mentioned a line that could sum up their lives simply: what is normal? True enough, what is normal for them is not widely accepted according to society standards. They even had to fabricate a lie — Olive is a widow whom the Marstons took in — to live under so that they can continue living the lives they wanted.
The acting of Bella Heathcote who plays Olive is commendable as well. It was evident that Olive was in love with Elizabeth, often gazing upon her with loving eyes. Olive also expressed hurt when Elizabeth misunderstood her feelings. If there is a weighing scale to this polyamorous relationship, it appeared to be that Olive loves Elizabeth more than she does towards Professor Marston.
The (Not That) Bad
If you are looking for how the story of Wonder Woman was developed, you will be deeply disappointed. However, it still pays to at least know the background of Wonder Woman. This is due to the fact that the origin of the Wonder Woman character, her costume and the Lasso of Truth will be explained in this film.
