Synopsis
Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie's basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie's trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael's first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. Evil dies tonight.

Gore without any guts.

Arising as a sequel to the 2018 movie
Halloween
and the twelfth installment of the Halloween franchise,
Halloween Kills
sees the aftermath of Michael Myers' killing spree in 1978, with the sole survivor Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) reprising her role from the 1978 original. The sequel presents other familiar faces including Lindsey Wallace (Kyle Richards) and of course, the iconic Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney).
Unfortunately, the plot here holds no candle to that of the franchise's earlier films. The story (or lack thereof) feels extremely sparse, almost as if it was intentionally so to move the thrill and gore to the forefront of the film. The introduction of new characters seems arbitrary when they are killed off without a single speck of character development. The gruesome mess you came for doesn’t make up for the poor story writing either, because you probably wouldn't move an inch when any of them died.
Despite cringe-worthy dialogues and head-scratching moments, there are a few highlights in the film that showcase a little of
Halloween
’s earlier spark. Curtis’ melodramatic (at times, excessive) portrayal of Strode has not weathered one bit. The film, quite impressively, exhibits the state of tumult and fear as the townspeople would be led to their impending doom, yet stays realistic with some being oblivious to the magnitude of the situation.
Halloween Kills
may frolic in all the slasher genre tropes there can be, but is it really enough?
Ultimately, the film is a desperate endeavor to feed what fans wanted without the aid of careful forethought.
Halloween Kills
is filled with all the dramaticised slasher stereotypes that will try their best to keep you at the edge of your seat for its 105-minute run. Despite it being empty and disjointed, the film might still satisfy your cravings for gore.
