Ron may have “gone wrong” but with his defects comes a heartwarming story about friendship.

Ron’s Gone Wrong is a simple animated film about family, love, and friendship. It isn’t anything we’ve never seen before but what does make it a little different above the rest are the little nuances peppered into the film. Little real moments that’ll make you forget it’s not a Pixar film.

Directed by Jean-Phillippe Vine and Arthur Christmas’ Sarah Smith, the animated film features the voices of Jack Dylan Grazer, Zach Galifianakis, Olivia Colman, Ed Helms, Justice Smith, and Rob Delaney.

It follows the story of young Barney (Grazer), the only 11-year-old kid in his school without the latest technology - a walking, talking robot friend - the B-bot. He lives with his grandmother Donka (an unrecognisable but very effective Colman) and single father (Helms) - whose work-from-home setup is a very close representation of some of us now.

The B-bot created by Marc (Smith), meant to be man’s new best friend, is sold by the Bubble company, whose CEO Andrew Morris (Delaney) is clearly a representation of Apple’s Steve Jobs and every other white male CEO in tech.

After not having any friends attend his birthday party, Barney’s dad notices his dejection and together with Donka decides to buy him his very own B-bot. But to Barney’s luck, the B-bot he receives (Galifianakis as Ron) has defected. What follows is a heartwarming adventure of a boy and his robot friend, a sweet and funny tale of friendship that’s full of humour and heart.

Locksmith Animation’s first feature may not be as memorable as Pixar’s (Toy Story) and Laika’s (Coraline) but if it’s any indication of its future, we should be excited for the plethora of animated content to come.
