From
Deadpool 2’
s David Leitch comes on of the year’s most thrilling films yet. Based on the acclaimed Japanese novel
Maria Beetle
by Kotaro Isaka,
Bullet Train
follows tained killer Ladybug, who wants to give up the life but is pulled back in by his handler Maria Beetle in order to collect a briefcase on a bullet train heading from Tokyo to Kyoto with only a few stops in between. Onboard the train, he and other competing assassins discover their objectives are all connected. The question becomes, who will make it off the train alive and what awaits them at the terminal station?
The film led by Hollywood’s golden boy Brad Pitt features an ensemble cast consisting of Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada, Logan Lerman, Bad Bunny, Andrew Koji, Michael Shannon, Zazie Beetz and more. Unfortunately for its whole ensemble, only the core cast are greatly utilised while the rest get lesser character exploration. In contrary,
Bullet Train
still manages to sneak in a surprise cameo. While the familiar face did not add much to the film’s plot, their presence definitely added to its comedy.
Thanks to Zak Olkewicz’s sharply written script, you will catch yourself laughing at lots of banter between the characters who cross paths on the train. Of course, it’s not an action film without multiple fight scenes–each intricately choreographed for a character. And coming from the same man who directed the sequel to
Deadpool
, blood and gore are to be expected. Pitt and Henry’s time in the Quiet Car might be most memorable amongst all but we’re here for GOAT Sanada slaying it with his katana. Also worth noting are the impeccable song choices in the film that heightened each fight sequence.
There's no denying the star power of Pitt, who carries the weight of the film on his shoulders, delivering some of the best laughs and kickass scenes in the film. But its not all
all
about him–Henry and Taylor-Johnson’s chemistry as assassin duo Lemon and Tangerine are standouts that’ll almost make you hope for a spin-off.
The high speed action-comedy suffers from pacing issues at times due to its large cast but Pitt’s magnetic charm and energy balances it all out perfectly, proving to us once again why his name is so synonymous with Hollywood to this day.
