From the writer-director of
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
comes a new romantic comedy that'll make you fall in love with romcoms again.
Ticket to Paradise
marks the on-screen reunion of Hollywood royalty George Clooney and Julia Roberts and their first romcom together. It also stars
Booksmart
’s Kaitlyn Dever and Billie Lourd, Maxime Bouttier, and Lucas Bravo from Netflix’s
Emily in Paris
.
Clooney and Roberts star as two divorced parents, David and Georgia Cotton, who travel to Bali after learning that their daughter, Lily (Dever), is planning to marry a man named Gede (Bouttier), whom she has just met. They decide to work together to sabotage the wedding to prevent Lily from making the same mistake they made twenty-five years ago. What entails is a chaotic time for all involved against the serene setting of a stunning location.
There may be nothing fresh about the sabotage plot in a romantic comedy, but where
Ticket to Paradise
lacks in originality, it makes up in creativity. Making the film take place in Bali (though entirely shot in Australia) was a stroke of genius on Ol Parker’s part–easily sweeping viewers away with the beautiful scenic shots of a beach getaway. If there’s anything everyone of us is longing for in these pandemic times, it’s a holiday and this film took us there.
We also need a good laugh every now and again and this film is not short of a good chuckle, sometimes more. One of the more memorable scenes that will make you laugh, smile, and thank the good lord for the existence of romcoms is as uncomplicated as it sounds–David and Georgia on the dancefloor after having one too many drinks. It’s almost as if Clooney and Roberts were no longer acting but just having pure fun. It’s obvious they have undeniable chemistry. Could it be that they are such experts in their art or because the bond between them was already forged decades ago? Either way, Clooney and Roberts they can do no wrong. The rest of the cast do their best against the Hollywood heavyweights but it’s only Lourds zany Wren (Lily’s best friend) and Bravo’s Paul (Georgia’s boyfriend) who stand out enough to leave a lasting impression.
Ticket to Paradise
feels like a ticket to the past where romcoms reigned supreme. If this is an indication the return of noughties romcom is upon us, we’re loving it!
