Synopsis
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

A fun and silly romp at the cinemas.

To adapt a
Minecraft
movie is to give writers the freedom to create something extraordinary with a popular IP whose only restriction is that everything is presented in basic cubic units. The possibilities are endless but the resulting adaptation feels more familiar than expected (Think
Jumanji
or
The Super Mario Bros Movie
).
Directed by Jared Hess (
Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre
) and written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta,
A Minecraft Movie
stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, Jennifer Coolidge and Rachel House.
The film follows Steve (Black), as he discovers a special orb that opens a portal into the Overworld, a cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. He decides to live there with his companion wolf Dennis until they are threatened by the evil Malgosha (voiced by House), leader of piglins with intention to destroy the Overworld and creativity as a whole. Steve thwarts her plans by having Dennis hide the orb in the real world, sacrifing himself in the process by staying behind in the Overworld.
Cut to years later, Garrett–a deadbeat former video game champion still chasing the high of his heyday (Momoa)–is now in possession of the orb but is oblivious of its powers until a young introverted Henry with a knack for innovation (Hansen) re-activates it and inadvertently transports them along with his sister Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) to the Overworld.
Steve saves the group of misfits from a zombie attack and shows them around the Overworld and enlightens them on its unique features. It doesn’t take long before the group is attacked by Malgosha’s minions, sending them into an action-packed adventure of abscosion and survival.
A Minecraft Movie
may have played it safe with its predictable action-adventure plot but it sure makes up for it with its vibrancy and family-friendly jokes and action. It works best thanks to its energetic adult cast bringing the laughs with their own brand of humour – Brooks and Coolidge make the best of their screentime with zingy liners, while Momoa gives the most scene-stealing, scenery-chewing performance of his career. As for Black, well, this fantasy adventure feels nothing short of a craft mined (sorry) for the actor to essentially make money being his goofy self. That’s not a bad thing because his energetic buzz is just what the film needed to keep it staying afloat. (The world-building simply felt lacking in comparison.)
Hess and company have essentially created something out of (almost) nothing to make an enjoyable movie for all ages,
Minecraft
player/fan or not. If this movie has taught us anything, it’s to not undermine one’s sense of wonder and creativity.
Don’t expect
A Minecraft Movie
to be anything deeper than a fun and silly romp at the cinemas, even if it tries to weave in more sombre scenarios of having to grow up and deal with real life ramifications. Free Garbage Tip: Go see the movie and you’ll get the reference.
