A genius blend of genres that challenges one's humanity and  views on artificial intelligence rights.

Films about artificial intelligence (AI) are nothing new. With that said, Companion isn’t quite just a film about AI, nor is it just a film about two lovers on a romantic getaway, or an intense thriller featuring a group of friends on holiday – it’s a genius blend of all of the above, packed into a handsome 90-minute film that’s bound to wow.

Written and directed by Drew Hancock, this new horror-thriller stars Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén and Rupert Friend.

Thatcher and Quaid play loved up couple Iris and Josh, joining the latter’s friends at a remote cabin for a weekend getaway. Things start to go awry when one in the group ends up dead, turning the film on its head as it ventures into different territory.

Thatcher – who has earned herself the title of “scream queen” having starred in films such as The Boogeyman (2023) and Heretic (2024) and tv series The Exorcist and Yellowjackets – plays Iris to perfection, delivering the right amount of control and stoicism of a robot with a touch of humanity. She’s the robot companion to Quaid’s Josh and if you’ve had the pleasure of seeing what he’s capable of in Scream (2022), you’ll be glad to know there are layers to his character here as well, allowing the actor to hone his multifaceted talents. Anchored by an examplary supporting cast – notably one questionably bonkers and another a surprising standout – together they bring Hancock’s twisted tale of AI vs humanity to life.

Companion deploys brilliant marketing tactics that all but reveal its true nature. There’s only so much we can say without giving too much away. In fact, the less you know about it the better.

If you’re looking for a good time at the cinemas, craving for quality content, or whatever it is may be, Companion is not a film to be missed.
