Six years after the monumental success of Parasite (2019), acclaimed writer-director Bong Joon-Ho returns with his third English-language feature film, Mickey 17. Starring Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Tim Key, and more.

Based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, Mickey 17 follows Mickey Barnes (Pattinson) who has decided to sign up as crew for a spaceship leaving Earth to colonise the planet Nilfheim, where dictatorial failed politician Kenneth Marshall (Ruffalo) is in control. Mickey's role as an “Expendable” means he is given lethal assignments and is reincarnated after every death via a cloning machine, except immortality here is seen more as a curse than a privilege. Each new clone is given memories of his past versions but have unique personalities distinguishable to those who know Mickey. The seventeenth iteration of Mickey is submissively meek and loyal to a fault, with Pattinson breaking out of his Hollywood heartthrob mold to play with exquisite delight.

On Nilfheim, Mickey is tasked to capture a native lifeform (a bug-like creature labelled “creeper”) for research but the assignment goes awry and Mickey is left for dead. To his surprise, the creepers carry him to safety instead of attacking him (because humans are the worst and prove a threat to other species living in peace).

Mickey returns to the ship and encounters Mickey 18, who is decidedly a more defiant and dominant copy. Pattinson plays both versions to a T, showcasing his range and abilities that should have his name crop up down the road come awards season. He carries the glorious burden of being the face of Mickey 17 with pure talent.

Now there are “Multiples” which is a big no-no in Marshall’s regime, leaving one Mickey to decide to off the other while the latter tries to negotiate a scenario in which both lives are spared. You can deduce which Mickey does what.

It’s no surprise Marshall wants to extinguish the creepers so he can rule the planet with no obstructions. He is every little bit of every dictator you can think of – down to the very manner his speeches are delivered – played with delicious malice from one Mark Ruffalo who looks to be having too much fun chewing the scenery.

Even when Bong Joon-Ho whisks us away to another planet, he doesn’t falter from losing the growing trend of showcasing his disdain for capitalism in his filmography. Not even escaping earth can we escape the subjugation of tyranny.

Mickey 17 is a film of self-worth and power play with a serious message to sell, packaged in a serious manner, but told in an unexpectedly amusing way. It’s funny, engaging, has heart and great performances–all the makings of exemplary entertainment on the big screen.
