Synopsis

Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier
Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team's hotshot rookie intent on setting
his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.

The filmmakers behind the stellar Top Gun: Maverick reunite to bring the magic they created in the skies to the circuits with F1® the Movie, a thrilling sports drama starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Javier Bardem, Kim Bodnia, Joseph Balderrama, and Will Merrick.

The movie follows fictional former Formula 1 driver Sonny Hayes (Pitt), who makes a return to the sport after friend and former rival Ruben Cervantes (Bardem) asks him to come out of retirement to mentor rookie prodigy Joshua Pearce (Idris) for his struggling Formula 1 team the APXGP.

Despite retiring from the premier motorsport due to a bad crash he experienced in his prime, Sonny has never given up on driving, choosing to dip in and out of other forms of racing events instead such as 24 Hours of Daytona and Baja 1000, or any job that puts him behind the wheel. He initially turns down Ruben’s offer but the chance at redemption is too good to pass up.

Sonny’s nonchalant carefree demeanour immediately clashes with the hot-headed Joshua but the fiery energy of their discord gives the film an added drive that isn’t the weight of the Formula 1 name or its cars. Pitt seems absolutely perfect for the role as the washed up Sonny. His lived in years as one of Hollywood’s most prominent stars has given him all the needed experience and grit to play mentor to a cocky up-and-comer, flawlessly executed by a red-hot Idris.

The rest of the team consists of experienced team principal Kaspar (Bodnia), race engineers Fazio and Nickleby (Balderrama and Merrick) and technical director Kate (Condon) – all who play really well into the notion of F1 being a team sport, caught in the crosshairs of Sonny and Joshua’s disagreements.

The plot isn’t anything out of the ordinary but thank to its stellar cast and thrilling sequences, the film makes for an exhilirating, edge-of-your seat drama that’ll have you holding your breath, gasping in shock and cheering.

F1® the Movie may seem like it relies on its brand name and star power to carry weight but is actually a well-crafted steady and grounded film centered around the fastest sport in world. Experience it on the biggest screen you can!
