Sound of Silence
(2025), directed by Li Wan, is a compelling two-hour Chinese crime drama inspired by the real-life experiences of CODA lawyer Zhang Qi. The film explores profound themes of morality and justice through the lens of the deaf community, offering a nuanced portrayal of societal marginalisation.
The film boasts a strong cast, including Tian Jian Ci, Lan Xi Ya, Wang Ge, Pan Bin Long, Wang Yan Hui, and Ning Huan Yu, whose performances add layers of realism and emotional depth to the narrative.
Audiences are introduced to Li Qi (Tan), a struggling lawyer born into a deaf family and raised in the "Deaf Building." His upbringing, rooted in a community of deaf individuals, naturally shaped him into a CODA lawyer who understands and empathises with this marginalised group. However, Li Qi grapples with inner demons—longing to shed the labels of being part of a fringe community and a "street lawyer" operating from a makeshift office in the poorest district of town. Despite his fluency in sign language, he distances himself from his "deaf roots," yearning to become a "normal person" and gain societal acceptance. The film poignantly captures the struggles of children of deaf adults—often bullied at school and silenced by social pressures—embodying the sentiment, "No one can hear me anyway."
Contrasting Li Qi is his idealistic friend and office assistant, Xiao Tang (Wang Ge), who aspires to be a lawyer. Xiao Tang’s presence emphasises the core belief that the law should embody fairness and justice for all.
Li Qi's journey takes a pivotal turn when he encounters Zhang Xiao Rui (Lan), a deaf girl involved in petty scam jobs to support her imprisoned brother, Zhang Xiao Chen (Zhou). This leads Li Qi to offer his legal services amid a broader financial fraud scheme targeting the deaf community—vulnerable due to their limited access to information and communication barriers—making them prime targets for exploitation.
His fight for justice introduces Jin Song Feng (Wang), CEO of Set Sail Finance, who manipulates and preys on the deaf community’s vulnerabilities for personal gain. Unlike Li Qi—whose moral conflict intensifies—Song Feng, a CODA himself, fully embraces his predatory role, exploiting their longing for love and a better life to fuel his schemes.
While Li Qi successfully wins the case for the Zhang siblings, it comes at a moral cost. The victory is tainted as he compromises his integrity by cooperating with Song Feng and benefiting from his schemes. His newfound fame and wealth propel him into a high-rise office, but he silences his conscience and turns a blind eye to the suffering of those who are scammed, beaten, or driven from their homes.
When Xiao Tang discovers the truth, he chooses to stand by his principles, underscoring the film’s central message: justice and fairness are universal ideals society must uphold.
The narrative’s turning point arises in the second half of the film when two tragic events strike close to home—Li Qi’s friend faces bankruptcy, and Aunt Ma, a neighbour, commits suicide after guilt over her role in the scams. These events force Li Qi to confront his complicity and the devastating consequences of his actions. Caught between ambition and conscience, he faces a critical choice: continue exploiting the vulnerable or fight to defend their rights.
It is evident that Li Qi’s internal struggle symbolises a broader conflict between greed and righteousness. He initially accepts Song Feng’s hush money for fame and wealth, but this decision ultimately mirrors a Faustian bargain—daring to strike a deal with the devil to save innocent lives.
The film masterfully uses Li Qi's moral dilemma to explore systemic injustices, the social isolation faced by the deaf community, and the clash between law and morality. Director Li Wan refrains from relying on melodramatic clichés, instead allowing viewers to feel the emotional weight through subtle storytelling and quiet moments of hesitation. The film is notably one of the first Chinese films to address the judicial challenges faced by the deaf community, highlighting their vulnerabilities due to communication barriers, social exclusion, and information gaps.
Sound of Silence
is a rare and powerful film that redefines portrayals of disability, reminding us that respect is not rooted in pity, and true equality is when differences are neither pointed out nor stigmatised.
