Charles Dickens's 1843 novella, 'A Christmas Carol', has seen a wide array of adaptations since its conception but this might be its most unique one since The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992).

Writer-director Gurinder Chadha’s Christmas Karma is a musical comedy-drama adaptation of the Dickens classic with a Bollywood-inspired take no one will see coming but whose lives will be better for it after watching.

The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Kunal Nayyar, Leo Suter, Charithra Chandran, Pixie Lott, Danny Dyer, Boy George, Hugh Bonneville, Billy Porter, and Eva Longoria. Featuring music from Gary Barlow, Shaznay Lewis, and Nitin Sawhney.

Christmas Karma centres on Mr Sood (Nayyar) – the Scrooge of this story – a wealthy but grumpy British Indian driven by the mindset of wealth equals status, he disregards the poor and unemployed. As the classic goes, Mr Sood will be visited by the Ghosts of Christmas on the night of Christmas Eve – Past (Longoria), Present (Porter), and Future (George) – each showing him what he needs to reinvent himself into a warm and kind man just in time for Christmas Day. We join Mr Sood on this whimsical journey of self-discovery and learn more about the boy he used to be and how he became the man he is in the present. It’s an insightful and heartbreaking window into his life that allows us to empathise with an otherwise wretched character.

Chadha’s film is not just another addition to the ever-growing roster of holiday films. It’s a beautiful representation and harmonious celebration of the multiracial communities in today’s London. For a director known to celebrate her culture through her films, it is emboldening to see her not show it through rose-coloured glasses. Her lead character is not a case of blind race-reverse casting but also a representation of certain British Indians of power. The tale of 'A Christmas Carol' may be almost two centuries old but we still stand to profit from its important lessons that remain relevant to this day, so what better way to reiterate the message than through a refreshed version in a modern-day setting!

But as much as we love the infectious British charm of Christmas Karma, its true selling-point is the unmatched soundtrack that has everything from catchy earworms, to snazzy beats, and beautiful ballads. Each song eliciting the right emotion each moment requires, it’s no wonder the cast boasts multi-hyphenated talents that could hold a proper tune.

Christmas Karma is an insanely infectious festive film that modernises an age-old classic to celebrate culture and growth. 'Tis the season!
