Get swept up in The Drama as it follows the outcome of a game gone awry at a food tasting amongst friends, when one half of a soon-to-be wedded couple reveals too much. Written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, the film stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Alana Haim, Mamoudou Athie, Zoë Winters, and Hailey Gates.

Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Pattinson) are a happily engaged couple who find their relationship put to the test a week before their wedding. While dining with their friends Mike (Athie) and Rachel (Haim), the group go round the table telling each other the worst thing they’ve ever done. It’s a round of Truth or Dare Truth followed by a whole lot of judgement and consequence.

Coerced by her peers to share her story, Emma’s turn backfires when the rest of the group are less forgiving in their reactions to her truth than their own. Rachel is immediately hostile while Charlie stews in a dilemma that makes up the next act of the film.

The topic in conversation is heavily American that feels out of bounds for anyone outside jurisdiction to have an opinion. A subtle but evident tell sees Charlie, a British expat, reacting with nervous laughter as opposed to Mike and Rachel’s immediate disdain. He doesn’t quite know what to do with the information but is nary as disturbed as his friends, allowing their opinion to inadvertently shape his.

The air between the couple is tense as Charlie contemplates their relationship, recalling past instances of Emma’s actions that should’ve been flagged red. Suddenly he’s cautious and suspicious of everything but still convinces his friends (and by extension, himself) that Emma is a good person he will still marry. It’s not until Charlie finds himself in a bad predicament does he see himself as Emma’s equal again.

We’d like to think that Emma and Charlie’s relationship quirk of starting over every time they mess up is Borgli’s way of showing us that no relationship is truly perfect, it's really the effort both parties put in to make it so. They’re not ignoring their issues by rebooting, but rather accepting each other’s imperfections and choosing to grow together.

"The less you know, the better” is the approach best taken when it comes to The Drama. All you need to know is that it’s a thought-provoking conversation starter for the intellectually hungry. Just be careful who you reveal your deepest, darkest secrets to…
