If you’re looking for a heavily quotable film that will leave you in awe, look no further than Mother Mary. Written and directed by David Lowery, the film stars an all-female cast – Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs – led by Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.

Mother Mary tells the tale of a profound reunion between its titular character, a Lady Gaga-esque popstar, and her former friend and costume designer, Sam Anselm.

Their creative partnership had ended poorly when Mother Mary refused to credit Sam for her work but here she is at Sam’s doorstep, asking for a dress to wear. See, no one knows Mother Mary the way Sam does and is the only person fit to design a dress for the popstar’s stage comeback after a divisive accident. Despite her resentment, Sam agrees. What follows is a poetic war of words and a masterclass display of talent from both Hathaway and Coel like you’ve never seen.

There is something oddly poetic in the way the screenplay is written and how the characters bring it to life on screen. Hathaway is devastating as the troubled popstar but Coel will be the one to surprise you with the hypnotic way she moves and speaks. It almost doesn’t matter what they say at times because of how they say it.

A film so riddled with metaphors, it is no easy feat to discern what Mother Mary is. It feels obvious the two leads are in a game of minds with each other but only Lowery can truly tell what his film is trying to say. To make assumptions is to be subjective but with a screenplay so abstract, it’s the only way to go.

Weighted by style The Devil Wears Prada could only dream of, the costumes of Mother Mary tell a story of their own. That, combined with the masterclass theatrics of the two leads and musicality from Grammy-winning talents, you’ve got yourself an unmissable cinematic experience. Don’t miss it.
