Steven Spielberg has been telling us for decades through his films that we are simply not alone in this vast universe. In his first big blockbuster since his 2022 coming-of-age drama The Fabelmans, Spielberg returns to make a strong case for the extraterrestrials in the most profound way possible.

With a title as explicit as Disclosure Day, the last thing you’d expect is to feel left out of a conversation you have no context for but that’s exactly what happens and why the concept of disclosure alone is necessary.

Based on a story by Spielberg, the film follows tagetted whistleblower Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) as he races against time to release breaking news that will change the history of mankind forever: the day we all learn aliens exist. Starring alongside O’Connor is Emily Blunt as Margaret Fairchild – a Kansas City TV meteorologist, Colin Firth as Noah Scanlon – the head of the corporation preventing the leak, Colman Domingo as Hugo Wakefield – Daniel’s colleague and advocate for disclosure, and more.

Disclosure Day takes its time unveiling itself to us, dropping little pieces as the time ticks by. There’s no denying it’s a slowburn of a film with a time-sensitive story, but with every nugget of information gathered comes a jolt of excitement that brings its audience back to attention.

Are you team secrecy or team disclosure? Both parties have valid substance for argument but the most important point to note is not for either party, but rather an overarching take that no man should ever have the power of decision over everyone else.

You will never feel more lost or found than in the 145 minutes spent captivated by the sheer storytelling and mesmerising performances of Disclosure Day. Blunt gives the most layered performance of her career (all while masking an accent!) that certainly leaves a lasting impression amidst all the alien noise.

This is not the wildest concept you’d have heard of but it is a bold take from a man of stature to make such a statement in a time when his goverment may just pull off an in-real-life disclosure day of their own.
