Synopsis	The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” and this time it’s Toy meets Tech. After what was initially thought to be the final film in the franchise, Disney and Pixar have managed to churn out sequels post-Toy Story 3 (2010). It’s never a good idea to overstay your welcome but there’s no stopping the franchise with a perfect track record at the box office.

Enter Toy Story 5, the latest installment that addresses their public enemy #1: technology. The toys are left to their devices to stay relevant as their now eight-year-old owner Bonnie becomes attached to her new favourite “toy” – a kid-friendly tablet named Lilypad.

Directed by Andrew Stanton, and written by Stanton and Kenna Harris, the film sees Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Tony Hale, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Blake Clark, Annie Potts, Bonnie Hunt, Melissa Villaseñor, Kristen Schaal, Keanu Reeves, and Ally Maki reprise their roles. Joining them as new additions are Greta Lee, Conan O'Brien, Craig Robinson, Bad Bunny, Alan Cumming, and more.

This may be the studios’ most direct jab at the cultural landscape among the current generation, at the expense of all generations. It’s not the first animated “touch grass” message we’ve received and let’s be honest, we’ve grown accustomed to being constantly on our devices now and if watching this film feels like a guilt trip, they’ve done something right.

Toy Story 5 deals a two-hander with the rise of technology not only erasing traditional toys but also, hindering real-life communication and exposure. Beyond the vibrant colours, signature tunes, warmth of familiarity and all the laughs lie powerful messages for all ages. Staying true to its core identity, this film is here to reiterate the importance of selflessness, friendship, and embracing one’s individuality. When the toys stopped caring about “going extinct” and instead focused on Bonnie’s needs of making a real friend is the moment the film ascended to a higher plane.

As much as it is about the kids of the current generation, Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5 very much feels like a film crafted for the generation of kids the franchise raised since its inception in 1995.

Is the age of toys really over? There will be parties who beg to differ but one thing’s for sure, Toy Story is forever.
