Psychologically disturbing yet visually pleasing.

The best kinds of films are the ones made by people who believe in them with the strongest conviction. Backrooms is one of those fortunate gems to have Kane Parsons at the helm, the very man responsible for introducing the concept of Backrooms in the mainstream.

Back in 2019, a photo was uploaded to the imageboard website 4Chan. Parsons (aka Kane Pixels) went on to create a viral web series inspired by the cryptic photograph. Five years later, he's directed and co-scored this feature length film, based on his web series.

Backrooms the film follows furniture store owner Clark as he discovers endless liminal spaces in the basement of his store. He involves the people in his life to this dimension – his therapist Mary, and his assistant Kat and her boyfriend Bobby to film evidence – subjecting them to the horrors yet unseen within the threshold. Stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Lukita Maxwell, Finn Bennett, and Mark Duplass.

With conventional horror tropes of tight spaces and wandering into the unknown, there’s an air about Backrooms that keeps you in suspense without fully giving you an anxiety attack. Perhaps it’s the fact that the rooms are brightly lit that’ll catch you off-guard, as opposed to darkness or overly green lighting. Relying on the dull and weary energy that leaves you feeling in a dreamlike state, every shot in the dimension is unnerving yet so atmospheric, you can’t help but also long to keep going back for more. It helps that the production team absolutely nails the most important element about this lore, and that is the eery and unsettling rooms.

It’s no surprise that Clark begins to lose his mind the longer he spends beyond the walls of his store’s basement. It is, however, rather unexpected for his therapist to care enough to risk her life looking for him after he leaves her a cryptic message. The shift in leads is less jarring than it sounds when you consider the backrooms the star of the show instead. Anyone can come and go and get replaced as easily as recognisable faces Ejiofor and Reinsve (both of whom give classy performances, may we add).

The Backrooms experience is almost inexplainable and sometimes, the best things just are.
