The Softer Side of Drax - Dave Bautista!

By InCinemas  /  11 Jul 2014 (Friday)

The wrestle-turned-actor Dave Bautista is one guy who may look strong and intimidating on the outside, considering the numerous championship titles he won during his time in the ring, but deep down, Bautista is not only calm and collected, he’s one emotional gentleman as well.

During the press conference on Thursday held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Bautista who said his passion lies with acting, mentioned he ‘broke down in tears’ when he received the news on his role as ‘Drax the Destroyer’.

“I was driving, on the way to the gym… my manager called, put me through my agent and he said ‘Congratulations Mr Drax!’, and I literally just broke down,’ the ex-wrestler explained. He was joined with director James Gunn and co-star Zoe Saldana for the Southeast Asia tour of upcoming Marvel blockbuster Marvel Guardians Of The Galaxy.

The action-packed epic adventure follows a group of disparate misfits - Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and tree-like humanoid Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) on their adventure to save the galaxy from the powerful villain.

We all know makeup is part and parcel in creating unique, special characters and hours are spent each day into breathing life to Drax and Gamora.

“You listen to your playlist at times, or talk about something, pass out and wake up in green,” Saldana recalled, adding “I forgot I said had said yes and am doing the Guardians!”

She went on to share how Bautista was ‘zen’ during his time when makeup was done. “I was very curious as we were getting (makeup) done in different trucks… and I heard he was the most zen person! So now I have to bring my game on.”

Bautista admitted to be a very zen person by nature and we couldn’t agree more. He explained with a very calm and collected tone, “I close my eyes when I wasn’t Drax, open my eyes I was Drax.”

On being oddballs and misfits, or being looked down at when you’re younger, director Gunn has some words of wisdom for you: “The first thing to remember if you feel like an oddball or an outcast is to know that at the end of the day, there are more of ‘us’ then are of ‘them’”. His words received roaring cheers from the crowd and no one puts it better than Gunn himself, who leads the pack of outcast to success in Marvel Guardians Of the Galaxy.

Don’t miss this chance to meet the stars at the red carpet tomorrow, 12 July, Saturday at Shaw Lido on Orchard Road.
