Singapore’s mountaineering community gathered at Shaw Theatres Lido last Wednesday to attend the charity premiere of Everest, held in support of the YMCA of Singapore’s Rebuilding Community Programme to build temporary shelters in Kavre, Nepal.

In April 2015, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake killed more than 9,000 people and injured more than 23,000 people in Nepal. Known as the Gorkha earthquake, it was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since 1934.

Mount Everest was also badly affected by the quake. Not only did it shift three centimeters southwest, many trekking routes were destroyed and would need to take some time for base camps and alternative routes to be remade.

At the charity screening, guests of the event included local adventurer Khoo Swee Chiow who has successfully climbed Everest three times, Singapore Women's Everest Team who are the first Singaporean all-female team to scale Everest, as well as Shariff Abdullah Peters, Singapore’s very own blade runner who is set to participate in the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon next year.

Proceeds from the charity screening will go towards providing temporary shelters for the victims of the recent Nepal earthquake.
