The upcoming ‘Top Gun’ sequel will be called ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, named after its main protagonist, US Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise . “I didn’t want a number. You don’t need a number,” revealed Cruise in an interview with Access Hollywood.

Cruise emphasised that this film will be stylistically similar to its predecessor. “It’s gonna be a competition film, like the first one,” he said, “It’s gonna be in the same vein, same tone as the first one, but a progression for Maverick.”

Tom Cruise’s role as Maverick back in 1986 was definitely one of his most iconic roles that cemented his status as a Hollywood superstar. The film was a huge box office success, earning more than twenty times its budget, and boosting the number of men signing up to be naval aviators by 500%.

He also revealed the return of Harold Faltermeyer’s score. Music was an important part of ‘Top Gun’. Its soundtrack album is 9x Platinum certified, making it one of the most popular soundtracks of all time. The original song “Take My Breath Away”, penned by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock, won an Oscar and a Golden Globe, among other awards.

Cruise keeps mum about what we can expect to see in the sequel. “There’s going to be aircraft carriers. There’s gonna be jets,” he said. What the audience is hoping to see is probably another topless beach volleyball scene.
