What a star-studded cast.
Superstar Taylor Swift, Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson, late night host James Corden and thespian Ian McKellen have been cast in the upcoming movie version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash musical, ‘Cats’.
Helming the musical movie is Tom Hooper who directed ‘The King’s Speech’ and the most recent ‘The Danish Girl’. More importantly, he was also the director for the movie version of another musical film - Les Miserables, which starred Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.
While the exact roles of Swift, Corden and McKellen are not revealed at the moment, it has been reported that Hudson (who won her Oscar for her breakout role in ‘Dreamgirls’) will play Grizabella, the former ‘glamour cat’ that falls from grace. This also means that Hudson will be belting the classic track ‘Memory’.
Cats the musical is based on T.S. Elliot's Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, a collection of poems about the secret world of Jellicle cats. The first production premiered at the London West End in 1981, before transferring to Broadway and around the world.
The last ‘Cats’ musical performed in Singapore was in 2015 at the Marina Bay Sands. Read our review here.
Swift last appeared on the big screen was in 2014’s movie ‘The Giver’, while Corden and McKellen starred in Ocean’s 8 and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast respectively.
