Director Ho Wi Ding’s latest film, ‘Cities of Last Things’ kicked-off the 29th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) with a star-studded red carpet held at Capitol Theatre on 28th November 2018.

In attendance were the cast members of the opening film, including Ding Ning, winner of the 55th Golden Horse Awards for Best Supporting Actress, Mayday’s Stone, and Huang Lu. Joining them were Singaporean filmmakers, Tan Wei Keong (Director of SGIFF commissioned short film, Kingdom), Royston Tan, Tan Pin Pin, Craig McTurk and Alvin Lee. Not forgetting local celebrities such as Fiona Xie, Irene Ang, Benjamin Kheng, Adele Wong, Jimmy Taenaka, Constance Lau, Amy Cheng, Jason Godfrey and Sheila Sim.

Shot on expired 35mm film stock, Cities of Last Things seamlessly blends genres, from sci-fi to noir to romance. Spanning decades, the story comprises three significant moments in an ordinary man’s life, told in reverse-chronological order and pivoting around three women. Ho guides viewers through one man’s fraught inner world and the circumstances that led him to a life-altering decision. Ho commandingly employs cinematic language to discuss the root of our collective sadness—perhaps the very thing that makes us human.

The annual SGIFF runs from 28 November to 9 December, across various venues with film screenings, red carpet events, workshops, masterclasses and talks for filmgoers of all ages.
