Student-run film festival returns with two Singapore premières

Perspectives 2011, an annual film festival run by students of Nanyang Technological University, will present six films that sparked controversy, and elicited bans and censorship in their home countries.

The films represent some of the greatest cinema of both East and West, and have won many accolades at major international film festivals. These include two Singaporean premières, A Clockwork Orange and Caterpillar, and also The Battle Of Algiers, The Blue Kite, Syndromes And A Century, and Czech Dream.

Particularly exhilarating for film aficionados is the format the films will be screened in. Opening film The Battle Of Algiers and A Clockwork Orange, both acclaimed cinematic classics, will screen at Singapore’s largest theatre, GV Max, in 2K Digital formats.

The audience can catch the rest of the selection at the Alliance Française. With the exception of Czech Dream, they will be screened in 35-millimetre format with manually operated dual projectors, a tradition quickly disappearing with the rise of the digital age. This is a rare chance for audiences to watch moving pictures projected the authentic way.

The selection of films was handpicked and curated entirely by the student organizers, who had the intention of providing Singaporean audiences socio-cultural insights about controversy and censorship - issues that continue to divide regulators, film creators and audiences. The student organizers are also in charge of creating booklets, securing sponsorships, and managing the finances for the film festival.

The films will be screened at Golden Village VivoCity and the Alliance Française, from 27th to 30th October. Tickets are priced at $10 per screening, with discounted rates available for students and senior citizens aged above 60. More information about the films can be found on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/perspectivesFF.
