Johnny Depp is expected to receive the festival's highest accolade, the Donostia Award.

The Donostia Award is known to be the highest lifetime achievement award which is awarded to actors and actresses who have contributed to the film industry outstandingly.

The San Sebastian Festival which will take place on 22 September 2021, at Kursaal Auditorium, described Johnny Depp as “one of contemporary cinema’s most talented and versatile actors”. This puts him on the pedestal with prominent names such as Greogory Peck, Viggo Mortensen, Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Depp has previously attended the festival alongside his past works and recently starred in the biopic drama film , Minamata.

Notably, Depp has won prestigious awards namely the Screen Actors Guild Award Winner for Best Actor, a Global Globe winner and the winner of 14's People Choice Award.

As much as Depp is a Cinema icon of the present time who stars in reputable films like the Pirates franchise, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Alice in Wonderland and Edward Sccisorhands, a list of questionable judgements lingers.

Following the proceedings of legal commodities tangled to his name, the announcement has likely led to a myriad of emotions arising amongst the internet users. Oddly enough, San Sebastian’s Film Festival took the plunge unlike the rest who "played it safe" in recent years.

Apparently, honouring Depp such a prestigious award contradicts the sole purpose of "cancelling" him in the first place.

The actor claimed to not be a "wife-beater' to his ex-wife, Amber Heard which was overruled by the High Court judge in the year 2019 as there were evidence to show the abuse was "substantially true". In early August, Depp won a victory in his legal case against Amber Heard. Heard had pledged to donate the amount to American Civil Liberties union and Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Henceforth, Depp wanted assurance that Heard donated the $7 million she received in the divorced settlement after the couple split in 2016. Both parties fans’ are in a constant turmoil, claiming sides as to who is conscience.

Following the "substantially true" evidence in which he is a 'wife-beater", Warner Bros dropped him from the role of Grindelwald in Harry Potter’s spin-off, Fantastic Beast. As for Minamata, the recent muted release got Andrew Levitas, the film's director, at odds with MGM.

The divorce proceedings are not yet completed. Everything is currently murky since the truth has yet to emerge.

The actor is now involved in a $50 million defamation lawsuit with Amber Heard.
