The Projector proudly presents ‘Killer Films’, a curated showcase of neo-noir and serial killer classics in celebration of the 30th anniversary of David Fincher's SE7EN, a landmark title in the thriller genre.

Running from 12 January to 8 February at Golden Mile Tower and Cineleisure, ‘Killer Films’ features five genre-defining films that offer a gripping blend of suspense and masterful storytelling. Here's what you can look out for:

Cure (1997)

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure, considered a progenitor of the Japanese horror boom in the late 1990s and early 2000s, is also seen as a major influence on the Japanese horror film movement of that era. The film challenges viewers to question the nature of reality and debate between fate and free will. This 1997 Japanese neo-noir psychological horror film, starring Kōji Yakusho, follows a detective investigating a series of bizarre murders committed by individuals with no memory of their actions.

Standing out not only for its unsettling, minimalist narrative but also for its focus on emotional and spiritual detachment. It's terror lies in the subtle, unuttered ills of modern society and their human origins, leaving audiences to confront the hidden fears within everyday life rather than rooted in the supernatural.

Se7en (1995)

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, David Fincher's Se7en remains one of the greatest thrillers of all time, a cornerstone of the genre that has influenced countless films. Now presented in stunning 4K restoration, the film continues to captivate audiences with its dark brilliance. Its chilling villain, atmospheric visual style, and unflinching exploration of human sin and morality stand as a testament to Fincher’s mastery. Based on writer Andrew Kevin Walker's real-life experiences, the film is further elevated by the stellar performances of Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt.

A bleak and nihilistic study of sin, justice, and human depravity, Se7en unfolds through the lens of a detective story as detectives Somerset (Freeman) and Mills (Pitt) are pulled into a harrowing investigation of a serial killer whose gruesome crimes are inspired by the seven deadly sins. As the case progresses, the distinction between justice and vengeance becomes increasingly blurred, culminating in one of the most shocking climaxes in cinematic history.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Released over 30 years ago, The Silence of the Lambs, remains one of the most groundbreaking and culturally influential films ever made. As the first horror film to win Best Picture and one of the few films to deliver lead acting Oscars to both of its stars, it set a new standard in the genre. Blending suspense, psychological depth, and unforgettable horror, it remains a true cinematic landmark that continues to shape the landscape of film.

Based on Thomas Harris' chilling psychological horror novel, The Silence of the Lambs transforms the portrayal of serial killers and criminal investigations into a gripping cinematic experience, reshaping true crime storytelling. The film follows Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and violent psychopath imprisoned for murder and cannibalism, who helps FBI trainee Clarice Starling capture another serial killer, creating a dynamic that blurs the line between good and evil while showcasing a strong, determined female protagonist at its core.

I Saw The Devil (2010)

Initially banned in South Korea for its graphic content, I Saw The Devil is a visceral and groundbreaking thriller that pushes the boundaries of human depravity and revenge. Its unflinching portrayal of violence and the psychological toll it takes has made it a landmark film in both revenge thriller and cat-and-mouse game genre, while further solidifying its controversial and impactful place in cinema.

Starring Choi Min-Sik as Kyung-chul, a sadistic psychopath, and Lee Byung-hun as Soo-hyeon, a top-secret agent, the story follows Soo-hyeon on a relentless quest for vengeance after Kyung-chul brutally murders his fiancée. Consumed by unyielding fury, Soo-hyeon engages in a brutal cat-and-mouse game, driving himself to the brink of becoming a monster in pursuit of justice. A brutal cat-and-mouse game that tests the boundaries of morality and humanity.

The unrelenting violence, coupled with its meticulous direction and stunning cinematography, creates a grim yet poetic atmosphere that lingers long after the credits roll. Its portrayal of a secret agent driven to become a monster in order to catch another is a dark meditation on the cost of vengeance.
