Avenue Q: The Musical Review (Highly Recommended)

By InCinemas  /  02 Oct 2012 (Tuesday)

The first association that comes to mind when talking about Avenue Q would be that of Sesame Street, but apart from featuring puppets that look alike, Avenue Q is nothing like Sesame Street. Do not take the age recommendation lightly, this really isn't a musical that you should bring younger children to.

For those that have not been initiated to the world of Avenue Q in its previous run in Singapore, the story is pretty easy to follow: Princeton is a college graduate who moves to New York in search of his dream, and winds up staying in Avenue Q, where he meets other quirky characters like Brian the out of work comedian, Trekkie an internet porn addict, Nick the good-hearted slacker, ROD the Republican, Lucy the slut and most importantly, Kate the kindergarten teaching assistant. In Avenue Q, Princeton attempts to find his purpose in life, and may even end up with the girl of his dreams...

It may take a little getting used to, but once you look past the fact that the puppeteers are very much part of the "landscape" of the stage, Avenue Q is one of the most entertaining musicals around, filled with great music and lyrics, risque and frequently hilarious subject material, and a genuinely involving storyline. It helps that the cast has a collectively great set of pipes that really manage to bring out the best of the musical numbers, and that the puppeteering is executed almost flawlessly.

Even though this is my second time watching Avenue Q, it was still a great night out, and comes highly recommended (except perhaps for those who are easily offended). This would be the perfect musical to bring anyone along who feels that musicals are stuffy and boring - minds will definitely be changed after the lights come back on!
