Even before the finale of the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones, there was talk of a planned prequel. The series would have taken place thousands of years before the events of the flagship series and was one of several Game of Thrones-related projects that were put into development at HBO prior to the end of the series. 

Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts was attached to the highly-anticipated project and reports have been made that the pilot episode had already been filmed in Northern Ireland.



The spin-off series had the tagline, "The series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.” Got you interested? Well, TOO BAD because..

Bad News
HBO has officially anounced their plans to scrap the series altogether, which comes as a huge shock to fans and critics alike.

You'd think that it would get a free pass in, just for being related to HBO's most popular and most-Emmy-awarded series ever, but no. Instead, HBO decided to drop the bomb on fans in true Game of Thrones fashion, proving that nothing and no one is safe. 

But fret not! Even though the door to this prequel has closed, another has opened.

Good News
Just hours after the devastating news of the previously planned prequel not getting picked up, HBO has confirmed that they will house a new Game of Thrones prequel series called House of the Dragon.

The spin-off series, co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, has been given a 10-episode order and will be based on the Game of Thrones companion book “Fire & Blood”. Director Miguel Sapochnik who has frequented the director's chair on the flagship series will return to direct the pilot and additional episodes. 



Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will tell the story of the Targaryen kings who had long ruled Westeros. It will focus on House Targaryen, made famous in Game of Thrones by Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys and her fearsome dragons.

The announcement was made earlier this week as part of WarnerMedia’s HBO Max presentation, at which they revealed key details about the streaming service, including the price. There is currently no word on that service being available in Singapore yet.
