The Biggest 2016 Oscar Snubs
By Flora / 16 Jan 2016 (Saturday)
The 2016 Oscar nominations are here!
To be fair, there are many deserving films, directors, actors and creatives that are nominated for the Academy Award, Hollywood’s highest honour of cinematic achievements, but as with any Oscar here, there are bound to be the unexpected and the surprising misses.
Here are the biggest Oscar snubs.
[Carol] Carol might be one of the front-runners in terms of nominations, but no Best Picture and Best Director (Todd Haynes) is shocking. The fact that there are only eight out of the possible ten slots that were filled, one can’t help but wonder why Carol was left out since it was highly well-received by critics and moviegoers. InCinemas even named it as our ‘Die-Die-Must-Watch’ film of the year! [Ridley Scott] Despite ‘The Martian’ earning a great 7 nominations (Best Picture, Best Screenplay) and a win for Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) at the Golden Globes, you would expect director Ridley Scott earning at least a nomination for Best Director. The Martian, in our opinion, was one of his better works and we felt it was a sure in for him. This is truly a very unexpected turnout. [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] Sure, Oscar history never really had blockbuster favourites or superhero-themed films that made it big at the Oscars, but we felt Star Wars: The Force Awakens could be a possible contender for Best Picture. The technical nominations are a given (Best Visual Effects, Best Editing), but what about the nods for Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling? [Jacob Tremblay] He may just be 9 years old, but Jacob Tremblay was beyond fantastic in ‘Room’, co-star of Golden Globe Best Actress winner Brie Larson. He is one of the best child actors out there, and he deserves a spot in the Best Supporting Actor category. [Quentin Tarantino] Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to Oscar nominations, having known for his unique scripts and daring voice in his films. It feels like an insult not to have him in for the Best Screenplay category. [Creed] The spinoff of the Rocky franchise, Creed, is a fan-favourite film with a decent storyline and pretty good performances from Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan. Despite Sly Stallone with a Best Supporting Actor nomination, where are the ‘diversity’ among this year’s contenders? [Will Smith] Will Smith delivered a first-rate performance as doctor Bennet Omalu in ‘Concussion’, and it’s a pity that a Golden Globe nomination is what he has to settle with. Boo! [Emily Blunt] ‘Sicario’ scored a few nominations, but the movie’s lead actress Emily Blunt was ignored from a Best Actress category, despite her superb performance in the action-packed film. It's time the Academy recognises her potential.
